It’s astonishing to think that Macy’s has managed to run their Thanksgiving Day Parade, since it’s inception in 1924, every year without fail except for on three occasions and that was only because there was a war. Such is there stoicism to ensure the parade runs, they pressed on in 1963 just a week after J.F. Kennedy was assassinated. It proved to boost the mood of a nation still in mourning. On another occasion in 1958, there was a helium shortage that threatened the event. But unless there’s a war on, Macy’s refused to cancel the event. So they dangled their balloons from cranes that travelled the route with the rest of the parade. I think it’s fair to say they quite like putting this event on. So let’s take a quick look through the ages of this phenomenal parade that’s quite unlike any other.
